Manchester United have a dilemma at left-back and many supporters hope Harry Amass could be the one to solve it.
Harry Amass is a player Manchester United fans hoped might have featured in last week’s 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
United manager Erik ten Hag felt he was not quite ready, and he is not expected to be in the Europa League squad to face Twente.
Instead, Amass was in action for United’s under-21 side against Doncaster, and did his best to send a message to Erik ten Hag.
How Harry Amass fared vs Doncaster
Harry Amass was one of United’s best players on the night as the under-21s drew 3-3 with Doncaster.
Amass linked up well with Sam Mather down the left, and while the Red Devils conceded three times, he could not have done much about any of the goals, one of which was a direct goalkeeper error.
United showed spirit to come from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 and Amass was among the United players involved in winning the injury time corner which led to the equaliser.
There was a penalty shootout after the game, with an extra point going to the winner, with United winning 5-3.
Amass was among the United players who scored, dispatching his penalty high into the side of the net, leaving the Doncaster goalkeeper with no chance.
The 17-year-old’s key numbers from the game are presented below…
- 4 Tackles
- 2 Interceptions
- 8 Duels Won
- 75 Touches
- 2 Fouls Won
- 1 Chance Created
- 31/38 Passes Complete (82 per cent)
This was a game for Harry Amass to show how he competes against senior players, with Doncaster selecting experienced striker Billy Sharp.
Amass came through it well, and despite not seeing a lot of possession, he was competitive and put up good defensive numbers.
United have high hopes for Amass and believe he has high potential. Erik ten Hag said in pre-season it could take a few months – but he agrees Amass is a player for the future.
The teenager is continuing to show his worth, and was included in the Europa League squad, so will surely get his opportunity evenutally.
Luke Shaw problems persist
Manchester United’s left-back situation continues to create alarm. Luke Shaw suffered an injury days before the season began, and United claimed he would be back after the September international break.
Now Erik ten Hag has admitted that Shaw might not be back before the October international break.
It’s a farcical situation, with Tyrell Malacia taking baby steps towards his own comeback, the path for Amass remains open.
Amass’ latest performance continues to remind the manager that he has a talented young option waiting in the wings, who could be of real use to the first team.
