'A lot of rumours': £30m man reacts to claims he could leave Man United for European giants

International breaks are usually the time when exit-linked players open up on their future, and things are no different for Manchester United’s long-serving £30 million man.

Almost inevitably, when he arrived to speak to the media ahead of this weekend’s UEFA Nations League clashes, it seemed that some were more interested in working out his transfer plans than Friday night’s clash with Slovakia.

But Victor Lindelof, facing an uncertain future as his Manchester United contract enters it’s final year, was in no mood to fuel the media machine.

Reports this week claimed that Lindelof could leave Man United for AC Milan. Former Red Devils teammate and Sweden icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic works as an advisor to the Serie A giants these days.

Lindelof has also been heavily linked with a move to Turkey. Potentially one that could see him reunite with Jose Mourinho, Sofyan Amrabat and Fred at Fenerbahce.

But, as far as Lindelof is concerned, Manchester equals home. Not only for him, but for his young family too.

“There have been a lot of rumours about me for a few years,” Lindelof says at a press conference. “But my only focus is to get back and play and help my team-mates at United. I don’t think much about what is written [in the media].

“I have been [at Old Trafford] for a very long time. This will be my eighth year. A lot has happened in my career and life.

“It is a place that means a lot to me. Both children were born there.”

Lindelof, who turned 30 in the summer, joined Man United from Portuguese giants Benfica back in 2017. l

After falling down the pecking order, and with his contract due to expire next July, the defender may be powerless to prevent his departure from a club he has represented 260 times.

Lindelof’s wife recently indicated that they may look to stay in England should United opt against renewing the centre-back’s deal. A move to another Premier League outfit is an option that might come under consideration.

“I actually love England. We have lived there for seven years now,” Maja Nilsson told the Ursakta podcast a couple of months ago, the thought of leaving the UK a source of much concern.

“It really is like my home. We’ve been lucky because Victor has signed on for five years at a time. We have friends who have moved every year and (because the footballer is) on loan. I suffer with them.

“I have started a grieving process, because we don’t know. You never know what will happen.”

Lindelof is not the only Scandinavian star who has opened up on the uncertainty surrounding his status at Manchester United this week. Christian Eriksen is another who could depart on a free in the summer of 2025.

He admits that talks over a new contract have not yet taken place. Eriksen is glad to have survived a brutal summer cull at United, however, as talks with the likes of Ajax and Anderlecht ran aground before the window closed.
