Dwight Yorke fully agreed with two Man Utd legends over stance on Sir Jim Ratcliffe axing Sir Alex Ferguson from key role

Dwight Yorke echoed the same sentiments of Rio Ferdinand and Eric Cantona after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s controversial decision involving Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson was informed that his ambassadorial duties at Manchester United would come to an end once the 2024-25 season is done.

The legendary ex-United manager has been a club ambassador and director since he stepped out of management in 2013, with Ferguson still being paid by the club.

However, Ferguson met with United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe for an in-person chat and the iconic Scot was told that his ambassadorial contract would come to an end.

Ferguson, who is regarded as one of the best managers of all time, will remain a non-executive director and will still be welcomed to matches at Old Trafford.

According to The Athletic, Ratcliffe told Ferguson that United are ‘seeking to reduce costs’ at the club and would ‘no longer prepared to sustain his payments.’

British billionaire Ratcliffe, who became co-owner of United in 2023, has ushered in sweeping changes at Old Trafford since Ineos took charge of football operations.

Yorke reacts to Ratcliffe and Ferguson news

Dwight Yorke enjoyed incredible success under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford and was a key part of the Manchester United team that won an iconic treble in 1999.

The 52-year-old former United striker lifted three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup during his prolific spell at the Red Devils.

Speaking to The Daily Mirror, Yorke admitted that he was as “surprised” as anybody else when it came to Sir Jim Ratcliffe axing Ferguson from his role at United.

The United legend hailed Ferguson for his “unprecedented” contribution to United and insisted it was not a “fitting way” to treat someone of Ferguson’s stature.

“I am as surprised as everyone else,” he said.

“We are going through a change at the football club from top to bottom. Everyone is looking over their shoulder at the moment.

“It is not really a fitting way to treat someone who has done so much for the football club, his contribution is unprecedented.

“They have been so successful for such a long time, the only people who know what is going on are those people who have just come in.

“I am not sure if everyone will be in agreement with the changes, but this will raise a few eyebrows.

“If they can do that to someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, then I suppose everyone is on a tightrope.”

Ferdinand and Cantona on Ferguson’s treatment

United legend Rio Ferdinand took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and was stunned at how Ferguson had been “taken out” by Ineos.

“If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE [sic] at [Manchester United] – anyone can get it now,” he tweeted on Tuesday.

“Ineos sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?”

Eric Cantona went one step further than Ferdinand and the United legend ruthlessly slammed Ineos chief Ratcliffe for his treatment of Ferguson.

“Sir Alex Ferguson should be able to do anything he wants at the club until the day he dies,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Such a lack of respect. It’s totally scandalous. Sir Alex Ferguson will be my boss forever! And I throw them all in a big bag of s**t!”
