'Horrendous' Man United penalty decision vs West Ham leaves former referee speechless, it is 'one of the worst' ever seen

Manchester United were on the wrong end of a ridiculous VAR call against West Ham.

The Red Devils suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Hammers on Sunday afternoon as Erik ten Hag‘s side were left ruing missed chances… again.

It extended Manchester United’s terrible start to the season as they dropped down to 14th in the Premier League table, the same amount of points away from the relegation zone as they are to the top four.

After missing too many big chances in the first half, West Ham responded after the break and took the lead through Crysencio Summerville.

Casemiro drew United level with nine minutes left on the clock but the hosts regained their lead in stoppage time thanks to Jarrod Bowen’s penalty.

Man United concede controversial penalty vs West Ham

United went searching for a winner after Casemiro’s equaliser but VAR ensured the Red Devils left the capital emptyhanded.

Matthijs de Ligt came together with Danny Ings in the box but the incident was initially waved away by on-field referee David Coote.

However, Coote was then sent to the monitor by VAR after they judged De Ligt’s challenge to be a foul. It easily finds its place in the worst VAR decisions against Man United.

Bowen scored past Andre Onana from the spot to inflict United’s fourth league defeat of the season in a result which sees West Ham leapfrog the Red Devils in the table.

Ten Hag was furious at the VAR decision, calling it an “injustice” to his side, and even Alan Shearer disagreed with the penalty call.

Keith Hackett left speechless by West Ham penalty

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has now given his verdict on the penalty call, and like many United fans, he was left speechless.

Via The Telegraph, Hackett said: “Crikey me, this is horrendous. The decision to give West Ham a penalty that they won the game from – and could cost Erik ten Hag his job – is one of the worst I have ever seen. Matthijs de Ligt did not foul Danny Ings.

“I am struggling to even put this into words. It is bizarre – I am stunned. Actually, it is worse than bizarre. A park referee would not even give this as a penalty. Ten Hag has every right to be furious.

“It is not a clear and obvious error for David Coote to give no penalty. What on earth has Michael Oliver even seen, as the VAR?”
