Three moments Erik ten Hag will be remembered by as Manchester United manager after sacking

The moment that looked to be on the cards for a long time has happened. Erik ten Hag has been sacked as Manchester United manager after two and a half years in charge.

Manchester United have started the 2024/25 season atrociously with Erik ten Hag’s side losing four of their opening nine Premier League games.

United lost 2-1 to West Ham at the London Stadium with Matthijs De Ligt giving away what had been a controversial penalty late on with Jarrod Bowen netting the decisive penalty.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos decision-makers have decided to part ways with Ten Hag but the Dutchman certainly has some memorable moments as manager of the Red Devils.

Here are three of his most memorable moments as United manager.

After a shaky first few weeks in the Premier League, including defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, the Red Devils had turned things around but struggled to put together a consistent run of form.

However, following the 2022 World Cup, United came to life and were brilliant for months with statement victories over Manchester City and Barcelona.

Marcus Rashford was in top form for the Red Devils, putting in Ballon d’Or-winning performances, and the club looked to be seriously on the up. Not only did the results get fans excited, but how the club performed during these matches.

Part of these months of success during Ten Hag’s debut season included a superb Carabao Cup victory for United.

The Red Devils beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley Stadium thanks to a brilliant Casemiro header before a rampant Rashford made it two before half-time.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka put in an immense performance with Allan Saint-Maximin not allowed a sniff.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle would finish in the UEFA Champions League spots but the Red Devils were more than deserving of the victory, which marked the end of a six-year wait for a trophy.

The moment that Ten Hag will be most remembered for is United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final.

United entered the game after finishing eighth in the Premier League, and the Dutchman’s task looked impossible.

As well as taking on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who had beaten the Red Devils in the final of the same competition a year prior, the build-up to the game was dominated by the story that Ten Hag would be sacked irrespective of whether United won the game or not.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, two players brought in under the Dutchman, won the game for the Red Devils and saved the Dutchman from being dismissed.
