Manchester United have moved quickly to fill that managerial vacancy just hours after sacking Erik ten Hag as Ruben Amorim appears to be the chosen one.
Ruben Amorim has ‘verbally agreed’ to become the Man Utd manager and with that, Ineos have played their latest trump card in their efforts to bring United back to former glories.
Amorim was widely regarded as an outside candidate at best due to his reported reluctance to switch clubs in the middle of the season.
However, he has been convinced of the United project and it represents a significant coup for Ineos to capture a name that was sure to dominate headlines in the coming months.
For players in the Man Utd squad, there is one clear winner who can ascent to world-class status under Amorim’s guidance.
Amorim unlocks monsters
14 goals and four assists in 18 games this season. 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games in the 2023/24 season.
Of course, these are not Rasmus Hojlund’s numbers. In fact, United, as a team, finished just above that total for their team goals last league season.
Those are the figures of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish hitman who has unlocked the next level of his game under Amorim.
Amorim, generally favouring a vertical-minded, possession-based approach to the game, tweaked his tactics with Gyokeres’ arrival.
Due to his enviable physicality and ruthless finishing skills, Amorim turned pivoted to a game model where the focus was on getting the ball to Gyokeres as soon as possible with the defence still unsettled.
That will come as music to Hojlund’s ears who has spent far too long sitting inside the attacking box flailing his arms about as his teammates keep shooting from all corners of the pitch.
Hojlund’s dream manager
In terms of skill sets, it is almost scary how similar Hojlund is to Gyokeres. They both have the brute physicality to overpower their opponents and their instinctive finishing skills are second to none.
In fact, Hojlund is probably even faster than the Swede which has allowed him to beat defenders at both, pace and power.
Amorim has already shown that he adapts his tactics to unleash his best players and empower them to use skills they know best.
In Hojlund, he won’t have to do much to change because he is so similar to Gyokeres. With just slight tweaks in possession and getting other players closer to him, Hojlund can easily break past the 20-goal barrier regularly.
Then it is of course up the Dane to keep improving his game as Gyokeres has done but for now, he can celebrate the arrival of the man who can help him ascent to world-class status.
