Manchester United academy talent Jayce Fitzgerald is now finally set to get his opportunity to head out on loan this season.
The 19-year-old midfielder has seen his development hindered by injury over the past two or three years, but Jayce Fitzgerald remains a stellar prospect.
Ruud van Nistelrooy adored Fitzgerald, bringing him into the first-team fold while he was the caretaker head coach following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.
The quality of Fitzgerald has never been in question, but he has long needed a loan move away from United, having stagnated slightly, being too good for academy football but not fit long enough to get a loan.
But now he is set for his first loan.
Jayce Fitzgerald now set for loan to Rotherham
Bruno Fernandes is a supporter of Fitzgerald, and this alone is a pretty strong indication of his talent to have been endorsed by the captain.
Before the terrible luck with injuries, Fitzgerald was supposed to be the next big academy midfield breakout for United.
In April 2025, it was rumoured that Borussia Dortmund and some Eredivisie sides were trying to sign him on loan.
But now, fast forward 16 months, and it is League Two Rotherham where Fitzgerald seems likely to finally get his first taste of professional football.
This is according to Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail, who says the deal will be completed in the coming days, in what could be massively beneficial for his development if the teenager can stay fit.
This is a massive drop in terms of the clubs willing to take Fitzgerald on loan, but his only issue is keeping fit. But at Rotherham, Dan Gore managed to put his injury woes behind him.
Gore was Rotherham’s player of the season last year in their relegation from League One, and a similar season for Fitzgerald would see him rocket back up the pecking order at Carrington.
Don’t write him off just yet.
What kind of player is Manchester United’s Fitzgerald?
As a midfielder, Fitzgerald can do it all.
He can be tidy in possession, dictate play, and defend. Or he can be a progresser, carrying the ball and working hard further up the pitch.
United used Fitzgerald as a centre-back for portions of his youth career, which helped him develop as a player, but he has yet to really nail down one position in which he is best.
For Rotherham, he will probably take up a role similar to Gore, all-action, combative, but ultimately brought in to be that on-ball quality which is rarer down the divisions.
He is a very talented player and has the potential to be immense; he just needs to stay fit to begin reaching that potential.
