Manchester United have said goodbye to Ruud van Nistelrooy but many still believe that he will be back at Old Trafford one day.
The Ruben Amorim era is upon us and his first game is drawing ever closer.
Manchester United appointed Amorim as head coach on November 1 but allowed him to stay with Sporting until the international break.
Amorim is now in Manchester and gearing up for his first game in charge of United.
Amorim’s debut comes against Ipswich Town next Sunday afternoon and he will be looking to start with a victory.
Wesley Sneijder on Ruud van Nistelrooy
Amorim’s arrival has brought big changes to the United coaching staff.
Rene Hake and Jelle ten Rouwelaar both left United mere months after joining Erik ten Hag’s staff.
The big-name departure was Ruud van Nistelrooy as the former United striker departed Old Trafford.
Van Nistelrooy returned over the summer as he joined the staff under fellow Dutchman Ten Hag.
After taking interim charge for four games following Ten Hag’s exit, Van Nistelrooy has now left his role at United.
That decision has divided opinion and Van Nistelrooy’s former international teammate Wesley Sneijder has shared his verdict.
Sneijder has been quoted by The Mirror as saying that he believes United would be ‘clever’ to view Van Nistelrooy as a future boss in the Old Trafford dugout.
Sneijder feels that Van Nistelrooy could be United boss again in ‘two or three years’, already looking beyond Amorim.
“If United are clever – and I am sure that this is what they are doing – they will get Ruud ready to take over in two or three years,” said Sneijder.
Van Nistelrooy’s next move will be interesting
Ineos have appointed Amorim with a long-term view in mind.
It’s difficult to imagine that they chose to appoint a 39-year-old manager with a two-to-three year vision in mind.
The plan is for Amorim to be in charge of United for a long time and Van Nistelrooy needs to go out and prove himself as a manager elsewhere.
Reports indicate that Van Nistelrooy is wanted by Coventry City after they sacked former United striker Mark Robins.
Van Nistelrooy would have a tough job on his hands with the Sky Blues struggling in the Championship but this may be the start of a great journey.
Impress at Coventry and Van Nistelrooy could find himself managing in the Premier League before long – and that would be the best way to put him on United’s radar for the future.
