Ruben Amorim's biggest ever wins as Sporting manager, and heaviest defeats vs two very familiar names

Ruben Amorim has begun work as Manchester United manager and he has the gargantuan task of turning the team’s fortunes around.

More experienced managers than Ruben Amorim have been swallowed up and chewed out by the Manchester United machine over the past decade.

But what Amorim may lack in years, the Portuguese boss makes up for in ingenuity, enthusiasm, and a winning mentality. We wish him well at Old Trafford.

Amorim has still packed a lot into his years at Sporting. No manager in Europe’s top leagues has a better winning record over the same time period.

We have taken a look at the biggest wins and losses of Amorim’s career at Sporting…

Biggest wins

Sporting thrashed lower league Dumiense in the Portuguese Cup, one of two 8-0 victories the team enjoyed during the 2023/24 season.

Back-up striker Paulinho scored a hat-trick, with Vikor Gyokeres coming off the bench late to get on the scoresheet too.

The first team Ruben Amorim managed was Casa Pia. He showed no mercy for his former club to secure his highest ever league win.

Sporting ran riot, with Gyokeres and Trincao scoring two, while veteran defender Sebastien Coates also helped himself to a brace too.

The first really heavy win of Amorim’s managerial career came in a cup clash against Sacavanense. Just like the 8-0 win over Casa Pia, defender Coates scored two goals.

Heaviest losses

Ruben Amorim did more than prove a point to Manchester United when his Sporting side beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League, he exercised a ghost.

Amorim’s Sporting were demolished 5-0 by Pep Guardiola’s City in the Champions League knockout stages in 2022, and his latest victory showed how his improvements have helped to turn Sporting into a real force.

One loss that really stung Ruben Amorim was his Sporting side being thrashed by Erik ten Hag’s Ajax in the Champions League group stages.

Ten Hag’s Ajax won 5-1 with Antony on the scoresheet, a win that propelled him into becoming United manager months later. Amorim’s eventual revenge has come in replacing Ten Hag at Old Trafford just over three years later.

Another Champions League defeat, former United man Alexis Sanchez fired Marseille to a 4-1 victory over Sporting in 2022.

Sporting also suffered a 4-1 home defeat to LASK in 2020. All of Amorim’s biggest defeats have come in European competition.
