Ruben Amorim already has his own Viktor Gyokeres at Man Utd, can turn star into 63 goal striker

Manchester United are looking forward to new boss Ruben Amorim starting his role next week.

Ruben Amorim will officially start as new Manchester United head coach on November 11.

Amorim spoke at his press conference after facing Estrela Amadora on Friday, in which he declared he would not sign another Sporting player in January.

This rules out an early move for Viktor Gyokeres, who is claimed to have mixed feelings over following the manager to United in any case.

Gyokeres has a £85 million release clause, making him a hefty investment. Do Manchester United really have to spent the money?

The case for Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres signed for Sporting from Coventry City in summer 2023. His excellent form since has led to some to subsequently point out with hindsight that United should have signed him at the time.

Last season Gyokeres scored 43 goals in 50 games for Sporting, and he has followed up this excellent form this season.

Gyokeres has netted 20 goals in 16 games in 2024/25 to date, including four goals in their win on November 1.

That means for Sporting in total, Gyokeres has scored 63 goals in 66 matches for Sporting under Ruben Amorim.

If he can bring this kind of form to Manchester United, Gyokeres would be worth the money, and then some.

But amid a vow not to sign any Sporting players until next summer at the earliest, Manchester United’s goal-shy stars have a chance to prove their worth.

Amorim backed to turn Hojlund into Gyokeres

Manchester United have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring a pathetic nine goals in 10 Premier League matches.

Striker Rasmus Hojlund began the season with an injury. He has scored twice since, while Joshua Zirkzee has one goal, netted on the opening day.

Former Benfica boss Quique Flores has told Record that he believes Ruben Amorim will strengthen Manchester United collectively, and turn Hojlund into his own Gyokeres.

He said: “As far as Hojlund is concerned, the pack is the strength of the wolves. He is a good forward, but he will only reach his level again if the team changes its level of performance.

“Ruben now has the opportunity to train very good players in Manchester. Yes, he can do with Hojlund what he did with Gyokeres.”

Manchester United have been underperforming this season and are capable of a lot more than they are showing.

Club legend Gary Neville has urged Amorim to focus on getting more out of the players he currently he has, which includes Denmark international Hojlund.

In addition to Hojlund and Zirkzee, United fans have high hopes for wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin, signed from Arsenal in the summer, who netted a hat-trick in 14 minutes on his under-18s debut.
