Chelsea legend Frank Lampard dropped his verdict on what Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos must do with the arrival of Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos sacked Erik ten Hag from the Premier League club last week after Manchester United’s disappointing start to the season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was installed as interim manager at Old Trafford after former United manager Erik ten Hag was axed from the Red Devils.
United announced last week that they had reached a deal with Sporting CP to bring highly rated Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils triggered the Sporting CP manager’s £9.25m release clause and Amorim will officially begin his Old Trafford tenure from 11th November.
Amorim, who has led Sporting CP to two Primeira Liga titles, will have his first United match as the club’s new manager after the November international break.
Lampard and Man Utd problems
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff, led Manchester United to a 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
The 48-year-old United legend’s interim spell will end after this week’s Europa League clash against PAOK and Premier League match against Leicester City.
Frank Lampard wasted no time in pointing out the problems that United have faced since legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired from football in 2013.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “You talk about [Jurgen] Klopp, Pep [Guardiola], [Mikel] Arteta, really successful managers.
“I think you’ve got to look beyond that – you mentioned Aston Villa and Brighton – they need to get the big picture right.
“When I say that I’m not taking responsibility away from the players. Players can use excuses.
“From the outside looking at Manchester United the last few years – the Glazers, the manager, it’s the next manager, the recruitment’s not right.
“When you see what looks like a lack of effort – most players really do want to do well, they do want to run but it’s not reflected there – players can use that as an excuse.”
Lampard on Ratcliffe instruction
Ruben Amorim will face his first test as United manager on 24th November when the Red Devils face Ipswich Town at Portman Road in the Premier League.
Lampard insisted that Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who became United co-owner in 2023, must show “support” and “time” to Sporting CP manager Amorim.
“There are many good coaches out there,” he said.
“I think this is a good, exciting acquisition but he needs to have the support, he needs have that time. He needs to go, ‘This is how I want us to be.’
“Nobody knows what Manchester United are anymore at the moment. He wants to coach, he wants to work.
“If they can get together and there are no excuses for the players out there, then they can make those decisions easier.”
