Ruben Amorim receives poignant warning from Man Utd legend over one ‘tough task’ facing him at Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Gary Pallister has made his position clear on the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the new head coach at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager came to an end in late October after the Red Devils’ 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham away from home.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of the Red Devils for a four-match interim managerial spell after Erik ten Hag was sacked by the Premier League club.

United triggered the £9.25m release clause in Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP contract earlier this month and the 39-year-old Portuguese agreed to the Old Trafford move.

Amorim arrived at United at the start of the international break and the ex-Sporting CP boss opted not to retain Ruud van Nistelrooy as part of his coaching staff.

Van Nistelrooy, who was an assistant manager to Ten Hag, left Old Trafford after managing three wins and one draw during his time as United interim boss.

Pallister reacts to Amorim’s success

Ruben Amorim built an impressive reputation at Sporting CP after leading the Portuguese side to two Primeira Liga titles and two Portuguese League Cups.

The Portuguese manager took charge of his first Manchester United training session on Monday at Carrington amid the November international break.

Speaking to EPL Index, Gary Pallister admitted that it was “quite impressive” to see the transformative impact that United manager Amorim had at Sporting CP.

“He’s won a couple of league titles in Portugal,” he said.

“The way he turned Sporting around was quite impressive, too.”

“I know a lot of the ex-players have been impressed with the way he handled the move from Sporting with such respect.”

Pallister on Amorim’s biggest challenge

United will return to action after the international break on 24th November, with the Red Devils travelling to Portman Road for their clash against Ipswich Town.

The Red Devils are currently 13th in the Premier League table and United are four points adrift from the top four with 11 league matches played.

Pallister has argued that Amorim, who signed a deal with United until June 2027, faces a “tough task” with altering the mindset at the Premier League club.

The ex-United defender, who lifted four Premier League titles at Old Trafford, added that Amorim will need to “build a team” that can mount a league title challenge.

“He faces a tough task in changing the mentality at the club though and he needs to build a team capable of winning the Premier League,” Pallister said.
