Harry Maguire has praised two “top” Manchester United teammates and has tipped one player to “learn a lot” during a “tough period” at the Red Devils.
The 31-year-old Manchester United defender extended his stay at Old Trafford earlier this month after the Red Devils triggered the extension in his contract.
Harry Maguire would have been out of contract in the summer, but the former Red Devils captain’s current deal with United will now expire in 2026.
The England international has revived his career at Old Trafford and Maguire has become a key part of Ruben Amorim’s defensive line-up for United.
Ruben Amorim has implemented his tactical system and the 40-year-old United manager has turned to Maguire as his central defender in the three-man backline.
Maguire has made 22 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils in the 2024-25 campaign and the United star has impressed at times under Amorim.
Maguire’s praise for Man Utd talent
Speaking to Inside United, Harry Maguire singled out Manchester United teammates Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro after their summer moves to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils beat the likes of Real Madrid to snap up Leny Yoro from Ligue 1 outfit Lille, with United agreeing a deal worth £52.18m for the player.
Matthijs de Ligt was reunited with former United manager Erik ten Hag after the former Ajax and Juventus defender was signed from Bayern Munich.
Leny Yoro missed the opening months of the 2024-25 campaign after he picked up an injury during United’s pre-season tour last summer.
But the 19-year-old French defender recovered from his period on the sidelines and has played under United manager Ruben Amorim as part of the three-man backline.
Maguire insisted that he has “no doubts” that Yoro will have a successful career at Old Trafford and the former Lille centre-back can be an “elite” player.
“They’re really good players,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“They’re top players, otherwise they wouldn’t be playing for this club.
“Obviously, Leny’s a young boy with all the attributes to go on to be an elite centre-back. He has everything that you want in a modern-day centre-back at the moment.
“He needs guiding through. Obviously, this is a tough, tough period for the club. But it would be a great learning curve for him and he’ll learn a lot from it.
“And I have no doubts he’s going to go on and have a great career for this club.”
Maguire impressed by Man Utd star De Ligt
Matthijs de Ligt made a name for himself under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and the 25-year-old Dutchman has settled in well at United and impressed for his side at times.
Maguire praised both the “experience” and “leadership” that the ex-Bayern Munich star has brought after the “numerous big clubs” that he has played at in his career.
“Matta [Matthijs] has obviously come in and looked really solid and he’s a good player,” he said.
“He’s been at numerous big clubs, so he probably knows a lot more about the pressures and the privileges of playing for these type of clubs. He brings great experience and great leadership as well.
“So [they are] two great players to have around the place. Like I said, at the moment, it’s a tough period for us on the pitch, but I’m sure there’ll be many times where they’re both playing and the club have turned things around and they’re winning a lot more football matches.”
