Wayne Rooney is one of Manchester United’s best players in history, and soon Old Trafford could be chanting for a new Rooney.
The record goalscorer of Manchester United is a player who was a favourite for any fan growing up in the 2000’s.
Wayne Rooney was part of the golden era under Sir Alex Ferguson, with dominance in the mid to late 2000s.
Rooney went on the captain the club and scored a whopping 253 goals for United. Not only that but his eldest son is now emerging as a real prospect at Carrington.
When asked by Gary Neville last season, Wayne complimented his son Kai Rooney’s potential but suggested it was simply too soon to tell if he was destined for greatness.
Now, he’s scored in a derby.
Kai Rooney helps Manchester United beat City
Being the son of a footballing legend and following your father’s footsteps is not easy. Just ask Zinedine Zidane’s children or David Beckham’s.
However, for the Rooney family – hopes will be high for Kai and his prospects as he continues to impress year on year in the United academy.
Now, as the academy kicks back into gear for 2025 – Kai has sent a reminder of his talents during a Manchester Derby at U15 level.
On Saturday, United’s U15s took on City in a Manchester Derby and the game saw United score a 2-1 win over the Citizens.
On the scoresheet was Rooney – as he revealed on Instagram after the game – which is a reminder of his elite ability.
Rooney will be aiming for U18 football next year
At just 15, it is hard to fathom whether Kai will follow in his father’s footsteps – however as the years pass by, he continues to look impressive to the point where in the next 12 months, we can begin to assess his real potential.
Rooney turns 16 in November and after this, he could be knocking on the U18 door which is when fans should start to get excited. Any comparisons to Wayne should be ignored, as Kai says he is a different kind of player.
Amir Ibragimov is 16 and is arguably currently United’s best U18 player, so if Rooney is the player his scoring stats and clips show then there is no reason he cannot follow in this direction.
It is still very early to get excited about Rooney – but if he keeps performing as he goes through the levels then there is no reason he won’t live up to his potential. It will become clearer over the next few years.
