Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is on loan at Chelsea, who are obligated to buy him.
One of Manchester United’s hopes in January 2024 was to sell Jadon Sancho. The club had to settle for a loan to Borussia Dortmund.
Despite occasional flashes of quality for the German club, there were no outright buyers for Sancho in the summer.
United eventually accepted a loan with obligation to buy deal from Chelsea, struck on transfer deadline day.
The deal has an obligation to buy at £25 million. This was deal Chelsea fans felt at the time was great value. Not so much right now.

Jon Obi Mikel flames Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho’s form at Chelsea has not been great. He has scored only two goals on loan for the club, the same number Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has to his name this season.
Former Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel has now hit out at Sancho’s latest performances for Chelsea, following back to back losses to Brighton.
He admits feeling ‘deceived’ by initial promise from Sancho, and admits he does not know what has happened to him.
Mikel told his podcast: “Jadon Sancho he’s come on he’s deceived us with a couple of games. We thought, of ____ we are getting this Jadon Sancho from Dortmund.
“He’s gone. I don’t know what’s happened to Jadon. He’s disappeared, off the grid.
“He takes the ball, he doesn’t go past people any more, he doesn’t create chances. He doesn’t help the team as much as he should be.”
Mikel said he was frustrated with Sancho for failing to tackle and track runners during the most recent loss.
He called for more on-pitch leadership: “There was no one telling Sancho for the first goal, you should have tackled for that. I saw a lot of players, the body language was horrible. People with their hands on their waist.
“The third goal they passed the ball between Sancho and Cucurella, Jadon didn’t go with the runner. This is the responsibility of the players. This is not the manager’s fault.”
Manchester United will take the money and run
Taking a substantial loss on the funds United paid for Jadon Sancho is not ideal. Yet right now, he is not performing like a £25 million player either.
Manchester United will take the money and run, giving a much-needed boost to the club’s balance sheet. Sancho can be Chelsea’s problem next season.
United saw over the course of three seasons that Sancho lacks the ability and heart to produce on a consistent basis in the Premier League, and that has shown out at Chelsea this season too.
Sancho said he wanted ‘freedom’ at Chelsea. But he is not free of the spotlight and scrutiny, letting fans down at his new club.
