Bruno Fernandes now faces former Man Utd teammate in race for coveted Premier League award

Bruno Fernandes is looking to get his hands on another award at Manchester United.

It has been an underwhelming season for Manchester United but it would have been so much worse without Bruno Fernandes in the side.

Fernandes has led Europe stastically this season both offensively and defensively. In an underperforming side, he has been a shining light.

Despite Fernandes being criticised by Roy Keane, the 30-year-old has been an excellent leader for the Red Devils. Ruben Amorim is a big admirer of Fernandes, and his message to the club’s recruitment team is that his side “needs more Brunos”.

Fernandes is closing in on Eric Cantona’s goal record at United, and he has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Bruno Fernandes up for Premier League award

Fernandes will be frustrated by the lack of silverware he has won at United, even though he did lift the FA Cup as captain last season.

But in terms of individual awards, Fernandes has dominated. Fernandes has won United’s Player of the Year award three times, including in the 2023/24 season. He is on track to make that four this season.

He has also won four Premier League Player of the Month awards, with all four coming in 2020.

The Premier League announced on Thursday that Fernandes has been nominated for the March 2025 award following his strong run of form.

In the two Premier League matches in March, Fernandes scored against both Arsenal and Leicester City while also picking up two assists in the 3-0 win over the Foxes.

Bruno Fernandes will have to beat Anthony Elanga

If Fernandes is going to get his hands on another Premier League Player of the Month award, he will have to pick up more votes than former United star Anthony Elanga.

Elanga struggled over the international break, but his form at Nottingham Forest has been extremely impressive.

The 22-year-old winger, who was sold by United for just £15million, starred in Forest’s win over Manchester City and then scored twice in a 4-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Elanga was tipped the ‘next David Beckham’ at United, but he was sold in 2023 in a move that the Red Devils might live to regret.

Despite leaving Old Trafford, Elanga still loves United and remains close to some of his former teammates – including Fernandes.

Fernandes has supported Elanga’s success at Forest this season, but now he will want to pip him to another individual award.
