Manchester United must land attacking signings this summer with Ruben Amorim surely eyeing additions in three key areas.
Ruben Amorim has brought his 3-4-2-1 system to Manchester United, and there have been mixed results so far.
United have moved away from out-and-out wingers, with Amorim essentially playing two number 10’s behind the striker.
Alejandro Garnacho has been forced to adjust his game to fit into the side, whilst Joshua Zirkzee is now playing as a number 10.
Amad is another factor in those roles, but Amorim may well be looking for United to invest in a quality attacking midfield player this summer.
Manchester United given hope over Matheus Cunha
United will look far and wide for that kind of player, but the perfect option may actually be playing at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Matheus Cunha continues to shine for Wolves, racking up 13 goals and four assists in just 26 Premier League games.
The Brazilian’s technical ability has been shining through in an attacking midfield role, sparking major interest in the process.
United were keen on Cunha heading into January, but he signed a new contract at Molineux instead of moving on.
Hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by former Wolves defender Max Kilman in the Shropshire Star, Cunha can leave Wolves for £62million thanks to a release clause in that contract.
United are unlikely to be alone in the race for Cunha, and the Wolves star has given interested clubs hope over a summer deal.
Speaking to The Guardian, Cunha has admitted he wants to take ‘the next step’ in his career away from Wolves.
Cunha did not feel comfortable with the idea of leaving Wolves in January, given their battle against relegation, but now feels that he needs to leave With Wolves almost safe.
“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” said Cunha. “Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.
“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential,” he added.
United confidence in Cunha move will be tested
Reports suggest that United still want Cunha this summer and believe that he would relish a move to Old Trafford.
That confidence will be tested, though, as Cunha clearly states he wants to win titles and ‘big things’ in the game.
United are not in a position to challenge for the Premier League title right now, and hopes of a trophy this season rest on the Europa League.
United have historically challenged for major honours, but returning to that level will take time and patience.
Cunha would need to strongly believe in Amorim’s project and United’s chances of returning to the Premier League in the coming years.
That would be a real leap of faith for Cunha, though the chance to play a starring role in a potential United revival could appeal.
United’s confidence in Cunha’s desire to join will be rivalled by many other clubs making a move, but we would love to see him as one of the two attacking players behind United’s striker under Amorim.
