Ally McCoist argues Man Utd would be unable to land £86.4m striker who would be the perfect Sir Alex Ferguson signing

Ally McCoist has said that he can’t see one striker playing for Manchester United now, despite being the type of signing that Sir Alex Ferguson would have targeted.

Ruben Amorim is expected to begin a major overhaul of the Manchester United first-team squad that he inherited from former Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.

The 40-year-old United manager arrived in the Old Trafford dugout in 2024 after he left Sporting CP and Erik ten Hag, who was sacked by the Red Devils last October.

United have struggled with consistency in the 2024-25 campaign and the Red Devils have lacked a clinical and regular goalscoring option in the final third this season.

The Red Devils have had to rely on Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as their main striking options, with both players underperforming in front of the net.

Joshua Zirkzee is in his debut season at Old Trafford and the 23-year-old Dutch striker has scored six times in 45 matches for United across all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund, on the other hand, has only netted eight times in 40 fixtures in the 2024-25 season and the 22-year-old Danish forward has lacked confidence at times.

Ally McCoist makes a statement about former Man Utd target that would have been unheard of in the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Old Trafford

Manchester United are widely tipped to sign a striker in the summer transfer window in their bid to improve Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been linked with different striking options in recent months, including Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

United were linked with Harry Kane in the past before the former Tottenham striker left Spurs and completed a blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2023 for an initial fee of £86.4m.

However, Ally McCoist has now argued that the Red Devils no longer have the same appealing aura that they once had under former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 62-year-old Rangers legend suggested that Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane would not sign for a club that might not be playing in Europe.

“Not this Manchester United squad just because of where they are,” McCoist told talkSPORT.

“It’s amazing we’re even saying that players would think twice about coming to Manchester United just because of where the club is at this moment in time.

“Harry Kane is not going to leave a team that is in the Champions League every season to come to a team that might not be in Europe.”

Sir Alex Ferguson would have done everything in his power to sign former Tottenham ace Harry Kane for Man Utd

Teddy Sheringham insisted that legendary former United manager Ferguson would not have passed up the opportunity to bring Harry Kane to Old Trafford.

Speaking to the Football’s Greatest podcast in January, the United legend said: “They’ve spent so much money on good players and good players are good, but when you’re talking about Manchester United, you need top players.

“Over the last two years, Harry Kane and Declan Rice both became available. Top players, lead by example, proven players week in, week out, great progressional players and they were nowhere near signing them.

“They let Harry go to Bayern Munich, they weren’t in the frame to get Arsenal away from signing Declan Rice.”

Teddy Sheringham added: “When those top players became available in Sir Alex Ferguson’s years, he went out and bought them… Gary Pallister, Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Wayne Rooney, he went out and got these top players.

“He said, ‘You’re coming to play for me now, you ain’t going anywhere else in the country, you’re coming to play for Manchester United because you’re one of the best,’ but it’s not happening now.

“They’ve got to get back on that road of signing top players who lead by example.”

United will host Manchester City at Old Trafford for their Premier League clash on Sunday, with kick-off slated for 4:30pm UK time.
