Ruben Amorim had a few transfer targets in mind when he made his move to Manchester United.
During his first window as Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim promised not to sign Sporting players in the January market out of respect for his former side.
But that didn’t stop the Red Devils being linked with several Sporting players including Viktor Gyokeres, who remains on Ineos’ shopping list this summer.
But Amorim wanted to reunite with Geovany Quenda at Old Trafford after giving him his professional debut during their time together in Portugal.
Ultimately, United lost out on Quenda to Chelsea, with the Blues set to sign the talented 18-year-old winger in 2026.

Geovany Quenda value skyrockets after Man United miss out
Back in February, reports suggested United were working on a £33m Quenda deal and had even agreed personal terms with the player over a move.
But it wasn’t enough to get a deal over the line and Chelsea signed Quenda for £42m leaving Amorim without his top wing-back target.
There is still a year to go until Geovany Quenda even makes his move to London, but with each passing month, it seems Chelsea have secured a huge bargain.
According to TransferRoom, Quenda has the highest potential of any player currently participating in the Euro Under-21s and his transfer value has already risen to €68.7M (£59m) – a £17m increase on what Chelsea have agreed to pay.
Quenda dropped a masterclass for Portugal’s Under-21s at the Euros this week, which might have United chiefs regretting their missed chance.
Ruben Amorim already has solution to Geovany Quenda snub
Amorim has stubbornly stuck to his 3-4-2-1 system at United despite not having the right profile of players to fit into his tactical setup.
In particular, United were short of wing-back options last season which explains why Patrick Dorgu was Amorim’s first major signing in January.
Ideally, Quenda was the perfect fit at right wing-back for Amorim having already thrived in the position at Sporting.
However, with Quenda now out of the picture, United have two options – spend big on another right wing-back or find an internal solution.

It seems Amorim went with option two as Amad Diallo is expected to play wing-back in 2025/26 having shown signs of promise on the right last season.
Amad being pushed further back also frees up space for the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and new signing Matheus Cunha to fill the No.10 positions.
