2012 Sir Alex Ferguson signing completes transfer to Bradford City as free agent

Former Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell has found a new club after his contract at Stockport County was terminated.

Manchester United fans will remember Nick Powell, who joined the club from Crewe Alexandra in a £6 million deal back in 2012 when Sir Alex Ferguson saw potential in the central midfielder.

Powell made his Premier League debut against Wigan Athletic in a 4-0 win, coming on as a substitute for Ryan Giggs in the 71st minute. He scored his first goal for United in the 82nd minute after receiving a pass outside the box from Javier Hernandez.

Although Powell spent four years at Old Trafford, the former England youth international only made nine senior appearances for the Red Devils and was sent on loan to Wigan, Leicester City and Hull City before securing a permanent switch to the Latics in 2016.

Since then, Powell has played for Stoke City and Stockport County.

The 31-year-old was recently on the lookout for a new club, but the former United midfielder can now look forward to competing in the 2025/26 season after agreeing terms with a League One outfit.

Bradford City officially sign Nick Powell

It has not taken Powell long to find a new club after having his contract ripped up.

League One side Stockport County announced on Monday that Powell’s contract had been terminated by mutual agreement.

Then, in a matter of hours, Powell completed a move to fellow League One outfit Bradford City.

Powell made 45 appearances for County after joining them in 2023, helping them to win promotion the following year.

The midfielder becomes Bradford’s 10th signing of the summer transfer window.

“I spoke to Graham Alexander last week and I am just raring to go. It is a new challenge for me, a new start, and I am looking forward to it,” Powell told the official Bradford City website.

“The manager outlined what he wanted from me and what I can bring, but more importantly, what I can do to help the team.

“I knew a few lads already, about six that I have played with before, but I have played against a lot of them over the years. They have been brilliant with me — it is a really good group.”

Bradford are currently sixth in League One after taking seven points from three games so far.

They face Stockport County tonight, but the game may come too soon for Powell to face his former club.

From League Two to the Premier League and back to League One, there is no denying that Powell has a wealth of experience behind him.

Powell didn’t meet the standards required at United, but that doesn’t change the fact that he had lots of potential, which is why Ferguson signed him.

After two spells at Wigan, Powell made 140 appearances, which is more than he managed at any other club.
