Ineos are slowly but surely improving Manchester United’s recruitment and that includes players they turned down as well as those they have signed.
This summer, Manchester United spent over £230m on five new signings who have strengthened Ruben Amorim’s squad for the 2025/26 campaign.
Just as importantly, Ineos were able to offload Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ over the summer with only Tyrell Malacia remaining on the club’s books after the window closed.
The priority this summer was to overhaul the attacking department with Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo signed as a new front three.
But things were almost very different for the Red Devils had Ineos not walked away from a deal in January.

Man United avoided £30m transfer mistake
Last season, scoring goals was a big problem for United with Rasmus Hojlund struggling for form as the sole striker option.
Inevitably, United scoured the market for attacking options in January and there were strong links to Mathys Tel that continued well into deadline day.
However, Ineos walked away from the Tel deal late into the window because Bayern Munich were demanding a huge loan fee.
It caused a meltdown among the United fanbase at the time, but in hindsight, it seems Ineos made the right call.
Tel signed for Tottenham instead and has since completed a £30m permanent move to the Premier League club.
However, Tel was recently snubbed from Tottenham’s Champions League squad by new manager Thomas Frank, suggesting he has already fallen well down the pecking order in North London.
Mathys Tel speaks out on Champions League snub
Tottenham qualified for the Champions League by beating United in the Europa League last summer, but Tel will play no part in the competition.
As quoted by The Sun, the 20-year-old has spoken out about being snubbed from their European squad.
“It’s clear that when you’re not on a list, it definitely hurts, but I’m someone who stays pretty positive, no matter the situation, because I think I’ve worked a lot on the mental aspect,” Tel said.
“Today it’s definitely a disappointment, I would have liked to be there.”
Ineos were right to avoid Tel last January, and their patience paid off with United instead signing Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko this summer.
Slowly but surely, decisions like this will rebuild fan confidence in the recruitment process.
