How Benjamin Sesko fared in Slovenia loss vs Switzerland, and the positives for Man Utd

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko got more minutes under his belt tonight as Slovenia suffered defeat against Switzerland.

After two seasons with Rasmus Hojlund as the sole striker, Manchester United endured a summer-long striker search as Ruben Amorim looked to add more goals to his team.

Many strikers were looked at, including Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres, but United eventually completed a deal to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Amorim has been careful not to rush the Slovenia international since he arrived at Old Trafford. The young striker has been named on the bench for the three Premier League games so far, while getting his first start in the Carabao Cup round two defeat against Grimsby Town.

United fans will be intrigued to see if Sesko is named in the starting XI for the Manchester derby on Sunday, especially with Mason Mount considered a doubt after sustaining a knock before the September international break.

Slovenia struggle against Switzerland as Benjamin Sesko starts

Slovenia are hoping to qualify for their first World Cup since 2010.

They kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 2-2 home draw against Sweden.

Switzerland won the game comfortably, beating Slovenia 3-0.

United striker Sesko was unable to impact the game.

That said, Sesko forced Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into a save with his only shot on goal in the 64th minute.

The former RB Leipzig striker didn’t receive much service as Slovenia managed just 35% possession throughout the game.

Sesko did manage to create two chances and touched the ball 21 times, including three touches in the opposition box.

The forward won all (two) of his aerial duels, while completing three defensive contributions.

Two major positives for Man Utd

There are two stand-out positives for United following Sesko’s last two appearances for Slovenia.

The 22-year-old has more minutes under his belt; therefore, his fitness should improve. That should make it more difficult to leave Sesko out of the team.

Finally, and arguably most important, Sesko played two games without picking up any knock or injury.

Sesko will be aiming to open his tally for United when Pep Guardiola’s struggling City side visit Old Trafford.
