Benjamin Sesko has an underrated trait that Man United are not taking advantage of

Summer signing Benjamin Sesko is yet to open his goalscoring account for Manchester United since joining from RB Leipzig.

Ruben Amorim wanted to improve Manchester United’s firepower over the summer window so Ineos sanctioned a £66m deal for Benjamin Sesko.

Sesko has shown glimpses of brilliance during his first few performances, but he has been brought in to score goals and he is yet to find the back of the net.

Poll: How many goals will Benjamin Sesko score for Man Utd this season?

Regardless, Amorim is pleased with Sesko, and it is up to the Portuguese head coach to set up his side to get the best out of the 22-year-old Slovenian.

So far, United have not played to Benjamin Sesko’s strengths.

Benjamin Sesko has little-known strength, Man United must use it

It is clear for all to see that Sesko is a huge physical threat, standing at 6ft 5in with a lightning-quick top speed.

But Sesko is an improvement on Rasmus Hojlund because he is so much more than that. He is also brilliant at holding up the ball, and his link-up play has been sharp in his first few performances.

According to FBref, Sesko ranks in the 91st percentile for successful take-ons compared to strikers in Europe’s top leagues.

He also ranks in the 73rd percentile for progressive carries and 75th percentile for progressive carry distance.

The stats prove that Sesko is an elite ball carrier, but United are not taking advantage of those skills.

Benjamin Sesko can thrive in upcoming fixtures

Sesko has now made six appearances for United, but played less than 300 minutes in total.

His only full 90-minute match came against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, but Sesko is now reaching full fitness and is ready to lead the line for United every match.

United have overcome their tough start to the Premier League calendar, and the upcoming games are more favourable on paper for Amorim’s side.

Manchester United paid £66.3m for Benjamin Sesko – Will this be a good investment?

He’s going to learn, but he has a great potential and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years.

Ruben Amorim on Benjamin Sesko

Starting with a trip to Brentford this weekend, Sesko will hope to start and open his goalscoring account for United.

With Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes all fit and raring to go, the service into him should be good. But it’s important for United’s new front line to build up a connection and understand what kind of passes they want.

Sesko will thrive with balls into the box that he can attack, but his ball-carrying should not be ignored.
