Manchester United’s 2026 looks set to be primarily centred around overhauling the midfield department, and a familiar name has now cropped up.
Over the past few years, Manchester United have let go of some very talented midfielders who came through the academy.
Angel Gomes went on to become a star for Lille, while several others have also gone on to shine
Having been released a few years back, Ethan Galbraith looks like a real quality midfielder and is Premier League-bound. Additionally, Maxi Oyedele has come into his own and now looks to shine for Strasbourg after his summer move.
But there is one former United midfielder now on the cards for a return.

What James Garner said after leaving Manchester United is damning for Erik ten Hag
Manchester United are considering re-signing James Garner in 2026, with the former Carrington talent set to be available for free with his Everton contract expiring.
This would see Garner return four years after his £9m deal, which took him to Everton.
After making this move, Garner explained his Manchester United departure, suggesting he was told by Erik ten Hag that he wasn’t needed, before he then departed.
“Ten Hag is a very approachable man, but very strict. He doesn’t allow anyone to break the rules,” Garner said. “He tells it like it is and punishes people who have done wrong.
“My discussion with him was easy for him. I simply asked him if I was going to be part of the group or if he saw me playing a role.
“I felt that the conversation had not gone as well as I wanted, and I made the decision to leave.”
James Garner could be an excellent signing for United
While not a starter-level signing for United, the addition of Garner would significantly improve the squad options at the disposal of Amorim.
By returning, Garner would be following in Paul Pogba’s footsteps, with the Frenchman being a hero for the 24-year-old.
Garner has had a top career so far, shining on loan at Nottingham Forest and then consistently being very impressive for Everton.
Currently, Garner is in the middle of his best campaign yet for the Toffees, averaging a 7.28 match rating on SofaScore after nine games, which is a standard that United could do with.
Adding Garner next summer alongside an Adam Wharton or Elliott Anderson would go a long way to Amorim-proofing the midfield.
