Antoine Semenyo has chosen his next club and is set to join Manchester City instead of Manchester United.
A frenetic transfer scramble for Antoine Semenyo appears to have reached a quick conclusion.
According to David Ornstein, Antoine Semenyo has chosen to join Manchester City instead of Manchester United.
The news comes after Chelsea and Liverpool both stepped up their interest in the winger too. He turned down Tottenham 24 hours earlier.
Semenyo has a £65 million release clause in his Bournemouth contract.
What is your message to Antoine Semenyo?
Has he made a mistake choosing to join City? What should United do now?
No United move for Semenyo
David Ornstein reports that while the move will not be concluded until January, the deal is all lined up.
He verified that Manchester United pushed hard to try and sign the winger, but that the move was difficult to do.
Ornstein posted: “Antoine Semenyo preference is to join Man City in January. Nothing formal until market opens but #AFCB attacker favours #MCFC.
“Man Utd pushed hard + never planned to use 25yo at wing-back but winter switch was always tough for #MUFC.”
BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone also reported the news, writing on X: “Looks like Semenyo to Man City will happen.
“United not willing to break wage structure and seems player opted against Utd anyway. Amorim wasn’t planning to use him as wing back.”
The message from both Ornstein and Stone focused on United not pushing Semenyo to play at wing-back, contrary to previous reports.
This appears like a club briefing, keen to indicate that United’s tactics were not the reason for the Semenyo deal falling through.
Instead it appears that Semenyo has either chosen the money, or been tempted by the chance to challenge for the title, or both, despite having no guarantees of game time.
Who should now be Man Utd’s top transfer target in January 2026?
After missing out on Antoine Semenyo, who should Manchester United be targeting?
Semenyo set for Old Trafford return
Antoine Semenyo scored for Bournemouth at Old Trafford in a dramatic 4-4 draw just a week ago.
He is now expected to return to Old Trafford in a Manchester City shirt for the derby in January.
The game takes place on Saturday January 17 at 12.30pm.
