Gary Neville came through the academy at Manchester United along with a talented bunch of youngsters, but Paul Scholes has explained what separated the former right-back from other members of the Class of ’92.
The Manchester United academy has been responsible for developing some of the best talent that graced English football.
From the Busby Babes, Fergie’s Fledglings to the Class of ’92 – there is no denying that United have proud traditions that stem from trusting youth players at the highest level.
The foundations were set by Sir Matt Busby and Jimmy Murphy and later adapted by Sir Alex Ferguson with the help of Eric Harrison. United fans hope that there will be a similar story to come from Ruben Amorim’s reign, but the Portuguese head coach is still adapting to the role after arriving at Old Trafford a year ago.
United are always on the lookout for promising players to join the academy. Once new players join the youth ranks, they eventually dream of replicating the rise of former players such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Gary Neville.

Paul Scholes reveals what set Gary Neville apart from Class of ’92 members
After an incredible career at United, as a one-club man, Neville has become a high-profile football analyst.
Neville is considered one of the most decorated English footballers of all time after spending 19 years playing for United. His honours include Premier League titles and the Champions League on two occasions, including the Treble success in 1999.
The former United and England right-back is often described as ‘busy’ because of the wide range of businesses and roles he is involved in.
Neville’s empire now includes hotels, property development, and a university, among others. He is also popular on the podcast scene and has appeared on multiple TV shows, including the Dragon’s Den.
In the past week, Neville was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame, as one of the best right-backs to ever play in the division.
Former United teammate Scholes, who came through the academy with Neville, explains how the 50-year-old has always had an obsessive mindset and was the most professional footballer he’d ever seen.
“When we were kids we were all Man Utd fans but he was just obsessed,” Scholes told the Premier League YouTube channel in reaction to Neville’s joining the Hall of Fame.
“He absolutely loved the place, loved being around it, the six or seven of us that managed to make it through to the first-team, he was always the most professional I’ve ever seen.”
