Man Utd's stance on bringing Marcus Rashford back to the club after sacking Ruben Amorim

Marcus Rashford fell out of favour at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim amid questions over whether the next head coach will open the door for the England international to return to Old Trafford at the end of his Barcelona loan.

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday as they began their search for a new head coach.

Amorim was United’s head coach for 14 months, during which he finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final.

Although results improved this season, with United sitting 6th in the Premier League, Amorim challenged Ineos on Sunday before his job was deemed untenable. The comments that seemingly cost Amorim his job were made in the aftermath of United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

Darren Fletcher will take charge of United’s first team for the upcoming matches while they consider what to do next in terms of who will be interim manager for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

United still have a lot to play for, and a change in management may lead to new opportunities for several players either at the club or out on loan.

New head coach unlikely to bring Marcus Rashford back

Marcus Rashford was allowed to leave United twice on loan during Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford.

Rashford joined Barcelona on a temporary deal at the beginning of the season after he spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa.

After a bright start in Spain, Rashford wants to stay at Barcelona, hoping they activate the option to make it a permanent deal.

There are multiple reasons why United should avoid bringing Rashford back to the club in the summer, but reliable reporter Ben Jacobs claims that there are no plans in place for a U-turn on the back of Amorim’s dismissal.

Jacobs shared the following update in the latest GiveMeSport newsletter: “Some sources say Amorim was guilty of not explaining to those he didn’t select the reasons why.

“Then there are the departed players, who were largely frozen out. Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Antony all knew very clearly they were not part of Amorim’s plans, and that his decision was backed by the club hierarchy.

“And even under a new head coach, there is not thought to be a way back for Barcelona loanee Rashford.”

It remains unknown if Rashford would want to return to Old Trafford under a different head coach, but it sounds like United won’t be changing their stance based on what they’ve seen of the 28-year-old forward in Spain this season.

Marcus Rashford set for Spanish Super Cup semi-final

Barcelona have their first chance of silverware in 2026 at stake this week when they take on Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, which takes place in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Rashford will be hoping for a starting role in the game, after failing to cement a place in Hansi Flick’s side, despite a bright start in La Liga.

The other semi-final between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid takes place on Thursday night.
