The 22-goal Mexico sensation who should be Manchester United's new Chicharito - Opinion

Manchester United should pay attention to Armando Gonzalez, Mexico’s new strike sensation.

United prioritised the attacking department last year, but there is room for more additions.

Benjamin Sesko proved to be an impressive signing, with 10 goals so far in his debut season, but United will need to consider signing more strikers regardless of Joshua Zirkzee’s uncertain future.

United need more options at centre-forward, even if it’s just for cover, especially with Champions League qualification expected. It could also give the next head coach a plan B from the bench.

As of now, Sesko leads the line as the only recognised centre-forward at Old Trafford. United don’t need an expensive big name signing, instead requiring a low-cost, high-upside gamble.

16 years on from signing Chicharito, Manchester United should be looking to Mexico once again to fill the need, and the emergence of Armando Gonzalez.

Man Utd should consider the next Javier Hernandez

In early 2010, Javier Hernandez was making waves at Guadalajara, and Sir Alex Ferguson saw an opportunity.

It is understood that United’s chief scout at the time, Jim Lawlor, was given a recommendation by a contact in Mexico. The report was so glowing that Ferguson decided to move quickly.

United paid roughly £7 million to sign Hernandez from Guadalajara, and it didn’t take long for the young striker to make a name for himself.

The ‘gamble’ paid off as Hernandez scored 20 goals in his debut season and went on to become United’s first Mexican sensation, nicknamed ‘Little Pea’.

There’s now a new striker at Guadalajara making a name for himself in the same breath as Hernandez, so it may be a good idea for United to take note.

Since the 2009/10 season, no Guadalajara player has scored more goals than ‘Chicharito’ (21) in a single season.

Now, Gonzalez has surpassed that record with 22 goals in 30 games this season.

The 22-year-old is on course to become the first player to win back-to-back Golden Boots in the Mexican division.

According to Soy Futbol, Gonzalez is attracting scouts from Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and West Ham. The same outlet cites Transfermarkt for the Mexican striker’s market value, currently at approximately £13 million.

United should be in the market for a striker or two this summer, and it’s telling that other top European clubs are eyeing a move for Gonzalez.

Back in 2010, United had the foresight to move early for Chicharito. Now could be the perfect moment to replicate that move.

Javier Hernandez honours at Man Utd

Despite often starting on the bench, Hernandez maintained a world-class scoring rate and won plenty of trophies at Old Trafford.

Hernandez won two Premier League trophies and was runner-up in the 2011 Champions League following a final defeat against Barcelona.

Furthermore, Hernandez was voted Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in his debut season (2010-11) by United fans, after an incredible debut campaign.

If Ferguson had remained in charge for the rest of the decade, Hernandez likely would have remained a key player through the rest of the 2010s.
