Thomas Tuchel's latest England call-up proves Man Utd made £15m mistake Wayne Rooney also saw coming – opinion

Thomas Tuchel and Wayne Rooney’s words on Everton midfielder James Garner are a haunting reminder for Manchester United about the recently called-up England international.

James Garner’s Manchester United playing career came to an end in 2022 after the Red Devils allowed Everton to sign their 25-year-old ex-youth academy prospect.

The Red Devils secured an initial £9m transfer fee and agreed to add-ons that would take the deal with Everton to £15m for former Man Utd midfielder Garner.

United fans were not best pleased with the news when it happened in 2022, and Thomas Tuchel and Wayne Rooney have shown why it was a mistake now.

Thomas Tuchel’s assessment of Everton star James Garner shows the ‘underrated’ talent that Man Utd are now missing out on

James Garner went from the Red Devils’ cash-grabbing, PSR-benefiting sale to an England call-up under manager Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming March break.

The former Nottingham Forest and Watford player has been afforded the opportunity to build a real name for himself at Everton since his Old Trafford exit.

Garner has made 34 appearances across all competitions for Everton under David Moyes and has netted three times and registered six assists for his side so far.

Tuchel has not slept on the exploits of Toffees midfielder Garner, who has been labelled as an “underrated player” by the Three Lions head coach.

“James Garner just has a fantastic season,” he told The Football Association’s official website.

“He’s always available for Everton. He plays in multiple positions – right defender, left defender, six, eight.

“He’s fast, he has a clean foot and takes all the set pieces. I think he deserves it. He’s a bit of an underrated player.

“I saw him many times now live and [am] convinced about his quality and his character and want to see how he does in camp.”

Thomas Tuchel’s sentiments are powerfully echoed in Wayne Rooney’s admiration for James Garner

Garner’s ability to secure regular first-team football post-Old Trafford shows the £15m mistake that Ineos had no control over when it comes to the promising ex-United talent.

The Everton midfielder might not stand out like other names in world football, but to earn an England call-up for an uncapped senior player is quite the feat for Garner.

It was already a kick in the teeth for United supporters to lose Garner in the first place after rating him so highly during his development at the Premier League club.

However, Tuchel is not the only one to show the mistake that the Red Devils made, with Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney doing the same with Garner’s exploits now.

When Rooney says Garner is the perfect example of simply looking at someone and recognising that they came “through Man United’s academy,” the fumble was really bad back then and even more so now.
