Kieran Maguire makes £1m-per-week wages claim at Man Utd as Ineos prepare for triple exit

Manchester United have regained control of their wage bill under Ineos ownership and this summer there will be big changes to the club payroll.

As per the club’s latest accounts, Manchester United’s wage bill was £313 million, which dropped below Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

It marked a significant decrease of 14% from the £363m wage bill being paid in the 2023/24 season.

This summer, United will wave goodbye to Casemiro, who is the club’s highest earner on a wage of £350,000 per week. Marcus Rashford is also expected to leave, which will clear his £300,000 per week wages off the club’s books.

Man United are about to save £1m per week in wages

United in Focus have spoken exclusively to football finance expert Kieran Maguire about United’s wage bill, and he revealed just how much Ineos are about to save.

“If you take into account that Manchester United will potentially have Casemiro and Marcus Rashford off the payroll,” Maguire said.

“Plus, if Hojlund’s loan turns into a final transfer as well as one or two others that could be sold – they could be saving close to £1million a week off the wage bill.

“Of course, this gives them huge flexibility when they go into the transfer market.

“If the rumors are true, the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are on a substantially lower wage than the players that they’ve replaced.

“So again, this gives the club a large element of flexibility as far as the budget for 2026/27 is concerned. That will be doubly useful if Manchester United qualify for the Champions League.”

Champions League will inflate Man United’s wages

There are six games remaining in the 2025/26 season for Michael Carrick to achieve Champions League qualification.

The financial impact of the Champions League cannot be understated as it would ramp up United’s revenue in 2026/27.

But qualifying for Europe will also impact the wage bill. That is because United players take a pay cut if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, like they have done in the previous two years.

A return to the competition will bring a 15-25% increase in the wages paid to first-team players.

However, Ineos have been more cautious with the wages paid to new signings and the contract handling at Old Trafford has improved, so the wage bill at Old Trafford will still be very in control.
