West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a potential midfield target for Manchester United following an impressive campaign on an individual note.
Although it has been a difficult season for West Ham in the Premier League, Mateus Fernandes has been a silver lining for the Hammers.
Manchester United are believed to be eyeing up several Premier League midfielders as they plan to revamp that area of the team amid Casemiro’s exit once his contract expires this summer.
Fernandes is one of many midfielders linked with a switch to Old Trafford. Other targets include Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba.

Man Utd can take advantage of Mateus Fernandes double blow
It has been a difficult week for Fernandes.
West Ham’s relegation fears deepened after a 3-1 loss against Newcastle.
To make matters worse, Fernandes was omitted from the Portugal squad for the 2026 World Cup.
This means there are two extra reasons why Fernandes would be a shrewd first signing for United this summer.
West Ham are set to be relegated to the Championship, and they will need to sell prized assets in the transfer window. It shouldn’t take much convincing if a team – like United – with Champions League football comes knocking.
Furthermore, Fernandes’ World Cup snub means he won’t be focused on preparing for the tournament or competing in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
There’s no real reason why Fernandes’ future can’t be solved early on in the transfer window.
It’s just a matter of time before we learn how serious United are about their interest in Fernandes.
Man Utd joined by Arsenal and PSG in Mateus Fernandes race
It is understood that United have had recent discussions with West Ham about the availability of Fernandes.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are keen on the Portuguese midfielder.
The report also adds that West Ham will likely need to recoup £100 million, with Fernandes arguably their most valuable asset.
West Ham’s need for quick money could swing in United’s favour.
Mateus Fernandes joins Kobbie Mainoo as contender for Premier League award
Like Kobbie Mainoo, Fernandes has been nominated for the Premier League Youth Player of the Year.
The 21-year-old has been one of West Ham’s best players, and it doesn’t look like they will be able to stop him from leaving this summer.
Fernandes will have no shortage of interest, having proven himself in the Premier League.
United may see it as a bonus that Fernandes could arrive with Premier League experience and hit the ground running, like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha did this season.
