Ranking four Marcus Rashford transfer club links after Man Utd and England star's release clause expired – opinion

Marcus Rashford’s future has dominated this summer after the England and Manchester United star’s move to La Liga side Barcelona failed to materialise.

The 28-year-old Manchester United player had a £40m release clause and was available to all clubs outside of Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, it has since emerged that Marcus Rashford’s ‘secret clause’ has expired and the England forward can now explore all options in front of him this summer.

The former Barcelona star has been tipped for an Old Trafford exit, but United In Focus has decided to take a close look at four teams that have been linked with him.

4. Arsenal (Premier League)

Unless Marcus Rashford decides to do the unthinkable, a shock move to the defending Premier League champions can be taken off the table this summer.

According to The Daily Mirror in June, Arsenal had reportedly been interested in landing Manchester United and England star Marcus Rashford.

However, Rashford is believed to want a move away from England and is exploring his options abroad after Barcelona did not sign him permanently this summer.

Likelihood of a transfer: 1/10

3. Newcastle United (Premier League)

Barcelona’s decision to make a shock move for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon this summer all but ended Rashford’s hopes of remaining at the Camp Nou.

With Anthony Gordon’s exit from St James’ Park finalised this month, a vacant spot at the Magpies could easily be filled by Rashford going into the new season.

Newcastle would be a more palatable choice for Rashford compared with Arsenal, but it remains unlikely that the former Aston Villa star would move to the Magpies.

Likelihood of a transfer: 3/10

2. Aston Villa (Premier League)

Aston Villa have seen several players already leave Villa Park this summer, including Manchester United signing Youri Tielemans after triggering his release clause.

Rashford did enjoy a steady loan spell at Villa Park during the 2024-25 Premier League season after he lost his place in the Man Utd XI under Ruben Amorim.

However, Villa did not sign him permanently in 2025 after his loan spell, but a reunion with Unai Emery in another loan deal could be a viable option, if unlikely.

Likelihood of a transfer: 5/10

1. Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)

Bayern Munich are one of the elite European clubs that have been linked with Rashford this summer and a move to Germany could be a real possibility for him.

TEAMtalk reported that the German club were exploring an option to sign the ex-Barcelona ace, but United might be forced to drop their £25m (€30m) asking price.

Rashford’s Man Utd wages could be another key stumbling block for a move, but the stature of a club like Bayern Munich would feel like a suitable destination for him.

Likelihood of a transfer: 6/10
