Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham told us how he would feel about being awarded a title medal years later.
Teddy Sheringham won three Premier League titles at Manchester United in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Like everybody else, he has been watching the big story in football unfold.
Manchester City have been found guilty by the Premier League, and face unprecedented sanctions. These include having their titles voided.
Voiding the titles is step one. Step two could involve re-awarding them; with potential repercussions. Manchester United could theoretically be awarded two league titles, for 2012 and 2018, years where City’s charges are applied to.
Former striker Teddy Sheringham told United In Focus that if he was part of those squads, he would not want to be awarded a title medal all these years later.
Speaking on behalf of Hajper, Sheringham told us: “Getting a winner’s medal now, years later? That means nothing. It would mean nothing to me.
“Football is all about the here and now, and what happened at the time. You might be able to say we always knew something was wrong or that you couldn’t believe they could spend all that money to bring these top players in, paying top wages, but it changes nothing for you as a footballer.
“Here’s a medal for that year where you failed to win the title? No, not for me.”
Former United players split over medals
David de Gea and Nemanja Matic have both expressed interest in being awarded a medal for their contributions. The latter’s case is most interesting, as he did not win a title at United. Being credited with one would embellish his legacy.
It is comparatively easier for Sheringham, and Wayne Rooney, to dismiss wanting a medal when they already have several in their collection.
Rooney said: “I wouldn’t really feel comfortable accepting another Premier League medal, if I’m being honest, because I don’t think we deserve it from the point of view as we didn’t do enough that season to win the league. “
Meanwhile former United star Roy Keane offered a different perspective, saying that if he was a City player right now, he would be throwing his winner’s medals ‘in the bin’.
