World Cup striker linked to Manchester United says he wants Premier League move

Canada striker Jonathan David has told French outlet la Voix du Nord that he is keen on a move to the Premier League.

The Lille striker says playing in England is his dream, and that he cannot see himself playing anywhere else. Sky Germany reported last month that Manchester United have scouted him ‘several times’.

David said: “In England, when I watch the matches, everything is full each time. As a player, it motivates you even more.

“I think it’s possible, very possible. I don’t know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League. It could well be the Premier League. It’s a very nice atmosphere.”

Jonathan David’s value did not soar at World Cup

Jonathan David’s Canada were eliminated in the group stages at Qatar 2022, despite giving a good account of themselves.

The 22-year-old striker started two of the three games and did not find the net, with his side eliminated at the group stages despite some creditable performances.

While this highlights that David is still a work in progress as an elite striker, it also means his price tag did not soar.

There is some mitigation for not scoring, with Canada in a group with two World Cup semi-finalists Morocco and Croatia, along with high FIFA ranked side Belgium.

With United reportedly low on funds, The Athletic report, that has to be a positive.

In Ligue 1, Jonathan David has scored nine goals in 15 games this season. He has 78 club career goals already at the age of 22.

For Canada, David has 22 international goals despite not hitting the net at the World Cup. The Mail report United have been tracking him since 2020.

He is under contract until 2025 with Lille. It’s unclear if United intend to follow up interest in him in January, or can afford to, with the French side likely to demand more than £30 million.

But if United did make a move, it’s very likely Jonathan David would jump at the chance.
