One of Manchester United's worst ever signings is enjoying his best season since 2016/17

Manchester United’s transfer history has been mixed in the post-Fergie era, and even the great man had his fair share of misses too.

But there have been very few players to flame out quite as badly as the man announced playing a piano at Old Trafford, Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez arrived at United from Arsenal in January 2018, where he had been one of the league’s best players the preceding season.

United hoped he would be the next Robin van Persie, but Sanchez did not even come close. He scored a paltry six goals for the club, and was eventually released in 2020.

Alexis Sanchez is finally bouncing back

Manchester United managed to offload Sanchez on a free transfer to Inter Milan. And he did fine at the Nerazzuri, playing a bit-part role as they won the league under Antonio Conte.

His time at Inter was solid enough, but they would have won Serie A without him. He scored 20 goals in 109 matches, with his best campaign in 2021/22 when he scored nine goals.

It was a moderate improvement from Alexis. However, he set the bar so low at Manchester United, that he could hardly get worse.

Now at Marseille, the Chilean is enjoying his best season since the 2016/17 season at Arsenal in which he struck 30 goals in all competitions.

His drop off at Manchester United still remains unfathomable, but now, for the first time in seven seasons, Sanchez has hit double figures for a single club.

Sanchez has now netted 11 goals for Marseille this season, including a strike from the spot this week to help Marseille knock PSG out of the Coupe de France last 16.

Marseille beat a Lionel Messi and Neymar led PSG 2-1. While they trail by eight points in Ligue 1, Sanchez’s side are enjoying a strong season with the 34-year-old leading the line.

While Sanchez’s United spell was a write-off, it is good to see his career has not fallen apart. Currently enjoying his best season in years, he will be keen for this run to keep going.
