David De Gea looks like he’s finally moving on from the club, with many fans upset after 12 years of the Spaniard, but one ex-United player who’s not bothered whatsoever is Roy Keane.
Erik ten Hag seems to have firmly made his mind up, De Gea isn’t Manchester United‘s number one anymore. It’s going to be strange not seeing Dave between the sticks, but it seems like we’ve already found his replacement.
Andre Onana has had very positive talks today with United and it appears a formal bid is going to be sent tonight for the Cameroonian.
An end of an era some may say. Enough to get certain fans sentimental, yes – but definitely not Roy Keane…
Keane doesn’t hold back on De Gea
Speaking on The Overlap (Via Mirror) the Irishman showed his true feelings about De Gea and pretty much confirmed that he was very on board with shipping him out of Manchester despite his longevity at the club.
“I’d move him on quickly. He wouldn’t be for me, he’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies, absolutely not. The idea that the players are patting him on the back is ridiculous, that’s his job,” Keane said.
“You wouldn’t keep him as a No. 2. He wouldn’t want that, he wouldn’t stay for that. He’s done okay, he’s won a few Player of the Year awards – but what big deal is that? It’s about what the team is achieving.
“I think he’s made far too many mistakes over the years. He was trying to leave the club for a few years ago and go to Real Madrid.”
Keane making his feelings very clear on the 32-year-old and we’ve got to say – we kind of agree.
Sentiment aside, De Gea is not the goalkeeper to take United to the heights they want to be reaching. You look around the clubs that have been winning trophy after trophy in recent years and there is always one common denominator – an astounding keeper.
Hopefully, Onana is the keeper to take United to those heights. We wish Dave all the best in the future and thank him for the time at the club – but, simply put, it’s time for a change.
