Why Ten Hag would be wrong to let 'Colossus' 50m valued star leave

Scott McTominay continues to show up on the international stage, leading Scotland’s charge toward European Championship qualification.

One player who seems to be definitely on his way out of Old Trafford this summer is Scott McTominay.

The midfielder was severely underused by Erik ten Hag, only registering 38 minutes of action across Manchester United‘s final four games of the season.

His position in the Scotland side however couldn’t be more different, a regularly dominant presence and more than that, a clinical goal threat.

The 26-year-old has scored five in four games for Scotland including a brace against Nations League winners Spain. This scoring streak has helped shoot Scotland well clear in their qualifying group.

McTominay is adored in Scotland due to his ‘dominant presence’ which led BBC Scotland to say, “he’s been a colossus in a team of giants.”

High praise for a player ten Hag seems so willing to throw away, which is why we think he shouldn’t. The club have reportedly slapped a £50million price tag on the midfielder, a fee likely too high.

Letting McTominay leave is a big mistake

McTominay is a player who has consistently won his managers trust; from Jose Mourinho to Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

This streak ended when ten Hag seemed to lose faith early into the season. The Scot’s technical ability and passing can at times, leave much to be desired. Therefore when played in a deeper role, he can struggle.

He instead thrives further forward, arriving into the box as a late runner where he has a lethal shot. Upon watching McTominay score multiple goals for Scotland, it’s hard not to wonder what could be if he was utilised as an attacking eight under ten Hag.

The club most heavily linked with him has been Newcastle. Allowing this move to transpire would be a huge mistake, as He would substantially strengthen a direct Champions League rival.

McTominay would likely thrive under the tutelage of Eddie Howe and seems tailor made for his high tempo game.

Another reason not to let McTominay leave is he offers Manchester United something they don’t otherwise have. A strong, tall, mobile and passionate midfielder who is ideal for the system ten Hag wants to implement.

The only way it would be acceptable to let him go would be in a swap deal for Declan Rice, given the two share a lot of physical traits.
