Alan Brazil has said that Manchester United made a mistake signing Andre Onana, saying that manager Erik ten Hag should have stuck with David de Gea.
The former Manchester United forward and talkSPORT presenter believes that David de Gea did well during his time at Old Trafford.
Brazil has not been very impressed with Andre Onana so far.
The talkSPORT presenter thinks that letting De Gea leave on a free and signing Onana from Inter Milan was a gamble.
United signed Onana from Inter in the summer transfer window for £47.2 million (BBC Sport).
Manchester United told about Andre Onana mistake
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are paying the 27-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper £100,000 per week (The Sun).
United were paying De Gea £350,000 per week (The Sun) in wages.
Brazil said on talkSPORT: “I thought De Gea was fine, I really do.
“To spend that much money on a guy who might end up slightly better, I thought it was a gamble.
“Hope it works for them.”
Andre Onana a better option than David de Gea for Erik ten Hag
While we do agree that David de Gea is a brilliant goalkeeper and is a very good shot-stopper, Andre Onana does fit the way that manager Erik ten Hag plays his football.
True, Onana was not great against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, but quite clearly the Cameroonian is better with his feet than De Gea.
And he is 27, younger than De Gea. This was a move for the future, as much as the present.
Ten Hag worked with Onana at Ajax, and he is fully aware of what the goalkeeper can and cannot do.
Every player makes mistakes. What is very encouraging about Onana is that after the match against Bayern, the goalkeeper publicly accepted his mistake and apologised.
It was brave. Not many players are willing to face the media after making a major mistake like Onana did, some you wouldn’t see for weeks.
