Obligation or option to buy: Sofyan Amrabat Man Utd transfer clause explained

Sofyan Amrabat sealed his long-awaited transfer to Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

An agreement with Fiorentina was sealed last Friday for Sofyan Amrabat, with Manchester United announcing the midfielder’s arrival 30 minutes before the transfer deadline.

Amrabat remained in Italy while the formalities were concluded, before travelling into Manchester at the weekend.

The Morocco international was formally unveiled on Tuesday and presented with his new number four shirt.

Sofyan Amrabat transfer clause

The deal which brought Sofyan Amrabat to Old Trafford was a loan move, with Financial Fair Play restrictions limiting Manchester United’s ability to spend at the end of the transfer window.

United have paid around £8 million as a loan fee for Amrabat, with the deal containing a clause which could see the transfer become permanent.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United negotiated an ‘option’ to buy as part of the deal, and not an ‘obligation’.

An obligation to buy would have made a transfer automatic at the end of the season, or at least would have been triggered if Amrabat player a certain pre-agreed amount of games.

Instead, United can part ways from Amrabat at the end of the season if they wish. Fiorentina have him under contract to 2025, having triggered an extension before loaning him out.

There is a strong chance Manchester United will look to make the Amrabat deal permanent. But this at least gives United a get-out, if it doesn’t work out.

Sofyan Amrabat injury concern

There is a minor injury issue for Amrabat at present, with The Athletic reporting a back problem was detected during the medical.

United agreed the deal anyway, and it is unclear if it is a problem which will cause Amrabat to miss playing time.

This may be one reason United were reluctant to, or able to agree the deal without an obligation to buy. The club will want to see how this one works out.
