'Too early for Man United': Summer target on why he rejected Red Devils move

Zion Suzuki has reiterated that it was ‘too early’ to join Manchester United this summer but the Japan international remains open to a future switch to the Premier League giants.

Altay Bayindir may have his fellow shot-stopper to thank after securing a dream move to Old Trafford on the final day of the transfer window.

Manchester United, after all, had initially prioritised Zion Suzuki, only turning to Bayindir after the former Urawa Red Diamonds starlet got cold feet about the idea of providing back-up to Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

Zion Suzuki turns down Manchester United move

“Anyone can solve that puzzle, right? It’s too early for Man United now!” Suzuki tells Het Nieuwsblad, sealing a move to Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden instead while opening the door for the Red Devils to renew their interest somewhere down the line.

“I now know from many Japanese predecessors that STVV is an ideal first step towards Europe. Later I want to work in the Premier League.”

According to Japanese publication Sponichi, Manchester United agreed a £5 million fee with Urawa Red Diamonds in July. The prospect of regular first-team football in Belgium proved too good for Suzuki to ignore, however, the America-born glovesman following in the footsteps of compatriots Daichi Hayashi, Tatsuya Ito and Ko Matsubara at Sint-Triuden.

Former Manchester United playmaker Shinji Kagawa also enjoyed a brief 12-month spell at STVV between January 2022 and 2023.

A future move to England is still on the cards

Starting each of Sint-Triuden’s last two Jupiler League games, Suzuki may already consider his decision justified. In his new Belgian home, the 21-year-old is already showcasing the passing range and the composure that earned him a place on Ten Hag’s wishlist, his ability to set the tempo and start attacks from deep reminiscent of Andre Onana’s early days at Old Trafford.

“It is true that there was an offer from Manchester United,” Suzuki told Goal a month ago.

“Of course, I would have liked to go to Manchester United. But I really want to spend time thinking about what kind of future awaits me. After much thought, I made this decision (to go to Belgium instead).”
