Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave a tell-all interview to The Athletic earlier this week following his sacking as Manchester United manager in the autumn of 2021.
The Norwegian has been out of work ever since his dismissal from the club. It was his comments on players reportedly refusing the club captaincy that pricked up the ears of a few United fans.
“I won’t name names, but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain,” the Norwegian revealed to The Athletic.
Well, according to The Sun, two players who turned down the captaincy during Solskjaer’s reign have been revealed.
Captaincy rejection
According to the report, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford were the players who turned down the United club captaincy.
The ‘source’ cited in the article reportedly said: “Paul Pogba was offered it (captaincy) but said he wanted to leave the club so turned it down.
“Rashford was also asked to take the captaincy but he said he didn’t think he was ready for it.”
Harry Maguire became the club captain when he joined the club from Leicester City in the summer of 2019.
Was Rashford right to turn down the captaincy
When the captaincy was up for debate, Rashford would have been just 21 years of age and surely too raw to be the United captain.
In that sense, it is certainly understandable for the Englishman to turn down the offer from the club.
This decision has been further proven to be the right one, particularly after the myriad of abuse Magure suffered due to him being the club captain and being in inconsistent form.
Pogba’s rejection of the contract perhaps is more questionable. The Frenchman could have been the face of the project under Solskjaer but was seemingly desperate to leave the club that summer.
With Bruno Fernandes as the new club captain under Erik ten Hag, the midfielder is the obvious choice and has been one of United’s most consistent performers for years.
