'I was going to fight'... Star explains determination to become Man Utd success

Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot has opened up about fighting for his career at Old Trafford after it looked like he may be on his way out of the club a few years ago.

Diogo Dalot was sent out on loan to AC Milan back in the 2020/2021 season and the former FC Porto defender’s future looked to be very much up in the air.

However, since Erik ten Hag has come into the fold at Manchester United, the defender has been given a new lease of life at Old Trafford and signed a new contract last season.

The Portuguese defender has been one of United’s more consistent players this season – even if Paul Scholes is not a fan.

Dalot’s fight

Speaking on the UTD Podcast, the defender has been speaking about the fight he put up and the determination he had to make it at Old Trafford.

“I remember I was in a phase of [being] with injuries, with struggling to get minutes and to play and now, looking back to that and seeing the position that I am today, that’s what makes me proud,” Dalot said.

“It’s not the way that I might be playing or what people might say about me, it’s just myself, inside of me. I look back and I see, okay, I didn’t give up. And I remember that I told you that I was going to fight for my position and I was going to fight for that.

“But I always felt that I could do something here, which I feel that I still can do even more. But that feeling at that moment to know that, okay, I have to. I cannot leave here without feeling that I can prove that I can play here for a while.”

Dalot’s season

As mentioned, the defender has won his place back in the side after he was relegated to a substitute after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when Aaron Wan Bissaka won his place back in the team.

Dalot has shown he can be relied upon from a fitness perspective, but with Wan-Bissaka returning from injury and showing what the club have been missing with the Englishman’s defensive capabilities, his place in the team may well be under threat again.

Dalot defender has one goal in 11 Premier League appearances this season and has also proven to be a valuable option at left-back.

However, with Luke Shaw on his way back from injury, the defender may have to show that same fight and determination he demonstrated back in 2020.
