Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has urged Erik ten Hag to follow Scotland’s lead on how to get the best out of Scott McTominay.
Scott McTominay has shone for his national team in the qualification campaign with 8 goals to his name, the Manchester United midfielder is behind Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo in the goalscoring charts.
Erik ten Hag has failed to get the best out of the Scottish midfielder at times this season. McTominay did score two crucial late goals against Brentford, as well as a scuffed finish against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
McTominay has won his place back under the Dutchman at Old Trafford but United are struggling to get the best out of the academy graduate.
McLeish on McTominay
Despite the midfielder winning his place back in the United team, speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, former Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish believes that Ten Hag needs to copy Steve Clarke’s way of getting the best out of the 26-year-old.
“That’s why I wondered why Manchester United and Ten Hag didn’t take a leaf out of Steve Clarke’s book in terms of what Steve’s done with him,” the former Rangers and Aston Villa manager said.
“He’s played him in the back three also and as a holding midfielder, but as an attacking midfielder, it seems to be more of his niche.
“So your thinking, maybe when he goes back to Man Utd, Ten Hag will play him in an attacking, forward role. There’s no shame in what Ten Hag thought his best position would be, but you can learn from other things and, for me, he should have looked at the way Steve Clarke has been playing him.”
McTominay’s best position
There have been questions throughout this season just about where the Scotsman’s best position actually is. The Scottish midfielder himself said that he prefers to play in the middle of the park.
His goalscoring prowess from further forward means he surely has to feature in an attacking role for the Red Devils.
The midfielder is surely set to start in the engine room for the Red Devils when they take on Everton at Goodison Park this weekend.
