Report: Bayern Munich exploring move for £26m Manchester United player, but there is a big problem

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is now attracting interest from Bayern Munich ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s fair to say that many Manchester United fans are a little baffled with the situation surrounding Raphael Varane.

The French defender finds himself down the pecking order at Old Trafford; even Jonny Evans is getting picked ahead of him.

Can you imagine being told when Varane signed from Real Madrid in 2021 that he would end up being behind Jonny Evans in the pecking order?

Surely nobody could have seen that coming, with the writing now seemingly on the wall for Varane and his United career.

Bayern Munich exploring Raphael Varane move

Varane may well be on the move as early as January and a major suitor is emerging.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayern Munich are now interested in signing Varane.

It’s stated that discussions have taken place inside Bayern and the Bundesliga giants have been informed that a January deal could be done.

The big problem is that Varane’s salary – more than £17million-a-year, which works out to around £325,000-a-week – is beyond Bayern.

United won’t do a loan deal and want up to €30million (£26million) for Varane, so a deal certainly isn’t easy.

United already seem to be looking at Varane replacements

Varane’s limited role this season means rumours about a new defender arriving are no surprise.

Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo is one name that just won’t go away, with United seemingly keen on signing one French centre back to replace another.

Bayer Leverkusen ace Jonathan Tah is being linked too, whilst Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is seen as the ‘ideal’ signing inside Old Trafford.

The common theme with all of those defenders is that they are right-footed centre backs, just like Varane.

Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire fit that bill too, meaning somebody is surely on the way out.

It looks like Varane is the most likely departure now, but a move to Bayern seemingly has some way to go yet.
