Fabrizio Romano reports that Premier League leaders Arsenal are scouting Jeremie Frimpong after Manchester United walked away from a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen flyer over the summer.
It certainly wasn’t the sort of finish you would normally associate with a right-back – thumping the ball into the top corner on the angle during Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 hammering of Werder Bremen – but Jeremie Frimpong is no ordinary ‘right-back’.
The former Celtic and Man City starlet was reportedly disappointed when a potential move to Manchester United was called off over the summer, but he is certainly channelling that frustration in the right way.
That Bremen blast as Frimpong’s sixth of the season already, to go with his seven assists. And while Man United may have got cold feet – Erik ten Hag opting to keep the faith in Diogo Dalot and the rejuvenated Aaron Wan-Bissaka instead – there is certainly no shortage of alternative destinations opening up for a player living up to his ‘world-class’ potential at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Manchester United looked at Jeremie Frimpong
“There have been plenty of stories about Jeremie Frimpong and a £34m release clause in his contract. I can confirm that there is a clause. And he’s certainly a player who is greatly admired around Europe after some fantastic performances this season,” Fabrizio Romano tells Caught Offside.
“Frimpong has been scouted by Arsenal and Bayern Munich in recent times. As well as by Barcelona before they instead signed Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City in the summer.
“I think in June a move is likely for Frimpong. And he surely won’t be short of suitors as many clubs have been tracking him for some time. He certainly looks like one to watch for the summer.”
Arsenal move on the cards
According to The Guardian, Manchester United are looking to bring in up to four new players in the winter market. A right-back, however, is not one of the priorities as things stand. The Red Devils are instead pursuing a defensive midfielder, a centre-half, a number eight and a striker.
