Erik ten Hag has been let down, but now he’s letting Manchester United fans down too - opinion

Are Manchester United a club in crisis? Probably not. But a club in chaos? Absolutely.

It’s been a hell of a 2023 for Manchester United. We’ve had the everlasting takeover saga, issues with players, trouble with the media and arguably more statements than wins this season.

Erik ten Hag has been at the centre of it all. The man at the helm has been asked to remain the face of the club amid all the disorder – and is currently really struggling.

You can’t help but think he has been a little let down.

Erik ten Hag has been let down

On Friday, United fans eagerly awaited an announcement of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment, but instead – they were treated to another fiasco in ‘raw chicken gate’, where the Red Devils had their food hygiene rating for Old Trafford downgraded after guests at a corporate event were served raw chicken.

This just epitomises the ridiculous drama Ten Hag has had to deal with during his time at the club. It’s been an absolute circus at times, and as previously mentioned, the manager is at the epicentre.

This all wasn’t in his job description. Ten Hag was brought in to change how Manchester United performed on the pitch but has been made to work even harder off it.

No manager in world football has had this task – so you can’t help but feel for him.

But now Erik ten Hag is letting Man Utd fans down…

Amid the sea of disarray, Ten Hag was getting things right on the pitch. He won the Carabao Cup, got United to the FA Cup Final and secured a Champions League spot. But now, he’s letting Manchester United fans down.

Although we feel for him with the madness off the pitch, it simply doesn’t justify the woeful performances on the pitch. United have not scored in four games, and are playing some of the worst football we’ve seen post Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ten Hag can’t be exempt from blame. His tactics, lineups, signings and substitutions have all been contributing factors.

We don’t think he will, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that a few more bad performances could lose him his job. Ultimately, he will only have himself to blame.
