Manchester United fans are fearful of the Liverpool clash at Anfield on Sunday after Harry Maguire limped off against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Maguire has seen a remarkable transformation at Old Trafford after regaining his place in the United starting XI and undergoing a resurgence in form for his club.
The 30-year-old United defender lost the club captaincy last summer — having been replaced by Bruno Fernandes — and was linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
While West Ham were keen to land Maguire in the summer window, the former United captain remained at the club and fought for his place in the first team.
Maguire has established himself as a central figure at the heart of the United defence under Erik ten Hag after Lisandro Martinez was sidelined due to an injury.
However, United fans were dealt a major blow in the Champions League clash at Old Trafford against Bayern after Maguire hobbled off before half-time.
United fans fearful of Liverpool clash after Maguire injury
Maguire started the crucial clash against Bayern alongside Red Devils teammate Raphael Varane, who made a surprise return to the United starting XI.
The England centre-back impressed in the first half before he was hit with an injury, with Maguire receiving medical attention on the pitch before he tried to carry on.
However, Maguire’s run came to an end after he signalled for a substitution and was replaced by Jonny Evans, with the Old Trafford faithful giving him a warm reception.
One fan posted: “Maguire and Fernandes out Sunday, and they say Liverpool are lucky?”
“I hope that Maguire will be able to start against Liverpool,” a second tweeted.
Another posted: “Maguire, Bruno out of the potential onslaught against Liverpool in the weekend.”
Someone else commented: “No Bruno, Maguire, Martinez or Casemiro against Liverpool.”
A fifth wrote: “Without Maguire, Liverpool will kill us, these words I thought I would never believe it, [let] alone say it.”
“With Maguire injured, we will now lose 10-0 to Liverpool for sure,” one X, formerly Twitter, user said.
While a seventh added: “Well, that’s a major blow for Liverpool for the weekend with Maguire going off injured.”
Maguire’s injury is huge blow for Liverpool clash
Ten Hag can’t catch a break with injuries this season and Maguire’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time ahead of a trip to Anfield with league leaders Liverpool.
The United boss will be without captain Bruno Fernandes for the showdown with Liverpool after the Portugal midfielder picked up a booking against Bournemouth.
Casemiro has returned to training at United after recovering from injury, but it remains unclear if the ex-Real Madrid star will be ready to play against Liverpool.
Luke Shaw also showed some discomfort in the Bayern match and saw out the first half, but the United left-back was subbed off after the break for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
