Reaction
MUTV pundit Ben Thornley said he believes the defender’s experience is going to be vital tonight.
He said: “It’s a little bit of a gamble, he’s not played for six weeks but he has experience at this level and he is going to need it against Harry Kane who has started exceptionally.”
Dion Dublin believes Varane will make a difference, commenting: “The experience of Varane, its so important. Playing with players who have played at this level before, they know whats going to happen.
“He’s won everything Rapha, we need his leadership tonight.”
Wes Brown added: “He’ll be absolutely fine, it’ll be tough he’s not had much matchplay, gameplay. [but] the experience that he has, no problems.”
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are also absent from the squad due to illness, with a very young bench.
Bayern have already qualified for the knockout rounds but are playing for pride after a 5-1 loss to Stuttgart in the Bundesliga a the weekend.
How Manchester United qualify
Manchester United need to beat Bayern Munich to stand a chance of qualification. Then another result must go our way.
Copenhagen and Galatasaray must end in a draw, combined wth United’s win, to seal qualification. There is just a six per cent chance of both occuring.
If either of these things fail to happen, United will finish third and end up in the Europa League, or fourth and out of Europe entirely.
