Premier League giants Manchester United are showing an interest in a January loan deal for Bayern Munich wonderkid Mathys Tel, after the £17 million forward scored against Erik ten Hag’s side earlier in the season.
The 18-year-old Frenchman turned down the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur as part of the deal which took Harry Kane to the Bundesliga champions over the summer. And, six months on, it appears that he is equally dismissive about the chance to put pen to paper with Manchester United too.
According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Pletteberg, Tel has made it clear that he has little interest in a January departure from the Allianz Stadium, either on a permanent or a temporary basis.
A Man United side looking to strengthen their squad amid Financial Fair Play pressures were eyeing up a short-term loan deal for a player who scored against them in the Champions League group-stages, but the under-fire Erik ten Hag will have to look elsewhere for a new addition to his misfiring frontline.
Manchester United eye Bayern Munich forward
“The 18-year-old has decided to stay at FC Bayern this winter,” Plettenberg writes on X. “Many clubs inquired about a loan, including Manchester United, but no chance.
“He wants to stay with Bayern, learning from Kane, and trusts in more playing time under Thomas Tuchel.”
Tel, a £17 million signing from Stade Rennais in the summer of 2022, has six goals and three assists this season, cutting in from the left onto his cannon of a right boot to often devastating effect.
There are shades of a young Marcus Rashford about the way Tel tends to use his speed and fearsome ball-striking ability when drifting in from wide areas.
Mathys Tel is ‘extraordinary’
“He does extraordinary things,” smiles France U21 coach Thierry Henry, who himself made a career out of terrorising defenders on the left-hand flank (Kicker).
“When he enters a match, you see it. Already, he is scoring goals. When he comes on, he always faces forward. And even if he plays only one minute, he creates two chances.
“This is not to be overlooked. Of course, he still has things to work on. He’s young. (Tel must improve when) playing with his back to goal, with his control.
“But he already has what you sometimes have to say to an attacker; ‘You have to press , you have to run behind the defence, you have to be tough…’
