Manchester United have had an up-and-down season so far.
Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff just can’t seem to get his first-team squad to perform consistently in the Premier League.
Players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot are just not performing to the level we know they can do at Old Trafford.
The same can be said for the captain, Bruno Fernandes – who is also not operating to his usual high standards. This is reflected in a Premier League topping statistic.
Bruno Fernandes has given the ball away more than any other Premier League player this season
According to Sofa Score, Manchester United‘s captain has given the ball away more times than any other player in the entirety of the Premier League this season.
The statistic says that Fernandes loses possession more times per game than any other player in England’s top flight. The top five can be viewed below.
Possesion lost per game:
- Bruno Fernandes – 21.3
- Kieran Trippier – 20.4
- Trent Alexander-Arnold – 20
- Morgan Gibbs-White – 18.4
- Lucas Paqueta – 18.3
Bruno Fernandes’ statistic doesn’t tell the full story
Despite this being understandably worrying – it also doesn’t tell the full story.
The reason this is the case is because of the risky passes Bruno creates in his advanced playmaker role at Old Trafford.
Naturally, if you’re trying harder/riskier passes, fewer are going to come off. The fact Trippier and Alexander-Arnold follow him further backs up this theory.
This isn’t also the only Premier League statistic Bruno tops:
- Key passes per game, 1st
- Expected assists, 2nd
- Big chances created, 5th
There’s a reason they call him the ‘creative machine‘.
The fact United haven’t scored more goals is criminal and the blame can’t be pinned on Fernandes, even if he does lose the ball more than any other player in the Premier League this season.
